3D adjustment lets you precisely set a window sash in three axes: vertical, lateral and compression depth. Learn which screw does what, what tools you need, and when to call a professional.
PVC windows can be adjusted in three ways – which is why the process is called 3D adjustment. The three axes are: height (up/down), lateral position (left/right) and compression depth (how firmly the sash presses against the frame seal). All three can be corrected with an Allen key, without dismantling the hinges. The catch is knowing which screw does what – incorrect adjustment can make problems worse, not better.
What 3D Adjustment Is and Why It Becomes Necessary
Every PVC window drifts out of calibration over time: natural hinge wear, thermal expansion and contraction of PVC profiles, building settlement, or years of slamming instead of gently closing. The symptoms are familiar: the window won't seal properly, there are draughts, the handle is stiff, or the sash rubs against the frame. 3D adjustment restores the sash to its correct position using the adjustment screws built into modern hardware (Roto, Winkhaus, Siegenia, GU).
Tools Required
4 mm Allen key – fits the vast majority of PVC hardware sold in Poland. Bring a 5 mm as backup. PTFE lubricant spray – to apply to hinge pivot points after adjustment (10–15 PLN at any DIY store). Never WD-40 – it washes away factory grease. Clean cloths – to wipe old grime from hinges.
Hinge Anatomy – Before You Start
A typical side-hung PVC hinge (Roto NT, Winkhaus blueMatic) has three adjustment functions: Vertical adjustment screw – on the side face of the hinge, controls height. Lateral adjustment screw – on the bottom hinge, controls left/right position. Compression adjustment screw – perpendicular to the hinge face on each hinge, controls how deeply the sash presses into the frame.
Step-by-Step Adjustment
Step 1 – Inspect the window
Open the window and check hinges for rust, cracks or bending. Mechanically damaged hinges must be replaced – adjustment will not help. Identify the exact problem before touching any screw: does the sash rub on the right side? Is there a gap at the bottom? Is the handle stiff?
Step 2 – Vertical adjustment (top hinge)
The top hinge controls height. Find the side-facing adjustment screw and insert the 4 mm Allen key. Clockwise rotation raises the sash; counter-clockwise lowers it. Adjust half a turn (180°), close and test, adjust again if needed. Never exceed two full turns in one direction.
Step 3 – Lateral adjustment (bottom hinge)
The bottom hinge controls the lateral position. The lateral screw is usually a thread visible on the side face of the hinge near the sash profile. Clockwise moves the sash towards the hinge side; counter-clockwise moves it towards the handle. Same method: half a turn, test, repeat.
Step 4 – Compression adjustment (each hinge)
Each hinge has a perpendicular compression screw. Clockwise increases compression (seal pressed more firmly); counter-clockwise reduces it. Paper test: insert an A4 sheet between sash and frame – it should resist pulling but come out with one smooth tug. Too tight makes closing hard; too loose causes draughts.
Step 5 – Test and lubricate
Open and close the window five times. Check seal contact around the full perimeter. Verify that the tilt position opens symmetrically. Then apply PTFE spray to all hinge pivot points.
When to Call a Professional
DIY adjustment works when hardware is mechanically sound but the sash has drifted. Call a technician when: no combination of screw adjustments works after 3–4 attempts; the sash still drops after vertical correction; the handle continues to jam; there is visible mechanical damage; or the window has scissor-type hinges or is made of aluminium or timber.
