Why Windows Stop Closing Properly
The most common cause is natural wear of hinges and hardware. After thousands of open-close cycles over the years, play develops in the joints and the sash begins to drop or shift sideways, so the seal no longer contacts the frame evenly. Thermal expansion also plays a role: PVC profiles expand slightly in summer and contract in winter, and windows not calibrated for seasonal change can develop closing problems. Timber windows swell when they absorb moisture, causing the sash to stick or bind.
Less frequently, the root cause is incorrect installation – an unlevel frame or loose fixing anchors that have worked loose over time. In that case the sash itself is fine but the whole frame needs correction.
Adjustment vs. Repair – How to Tell
A quick test: close the window and gently push the sash up, down and sideways. Noticeable play means worn or misadjusted hinges. Check whether the seal contacts the frame evenly around the full perimeter – any visible gap means adjustment or seal replacement is needed. A stiff or jamming handle points to a multipoint lock or catch problem.
As a rule: adjustment is sufficient when the sash moves freely but its position has drifted. Repair is required when a component is physically broken, bent or completely worn out.
What 3D Window Adjustment Involves
Modern PVC window hardware allows the sash to be adjusted in three axes: height, depth (compression against the frame) and lateral position. A technician uses an Allen key on the built-in adjustment screws to dial in the correct position. The result is a sash that closes lightly and seals evenly around the full perimeter. Professional window adjustment takes 10–20 minutes per sash.
When Repair Is Needed Instead
A bent or cracked hinge cannot be corrected by adjustment – it must be replaced. Similarly, a failed multipoint lock mechanism requires replacement rather than calibration. Annual servicing catches these issues early, when they are cheap to fix. Left unattended, worn hardware accelerates and can result in sash drop that cracks the glass unit.
