Cause 1 – Sagging Sash (Worn Top Hinge)
A sagging sash is by far the most common cause. The bottom corner on the hinge side rises, the bottom corner on the lock side drops and rubs the threshold. If lifting the door by the handle makes it close easily — the hinge is the culprit. Modern 3D adjustable hinges (with a visible side cover hiding an Allen-key socket) can be corrected in minutes. Fixed hinges require removal and replacement. 3D hinge adjustment: 50–80 PLN. Single hinge replacement: 120–200 PLN.
Cause 2 – Warped Frame
PVC and aluminium frames rarely warp, but can shift if fixing anchors corrode or settlement occurs. Wooden frames warp more readily from humidity changes. Signs: a light gap running the full length of one edge, or the door needing simultaneous pushing and pulling to close. Minor warping in wooden frames may respond to drying and re-impregnation; frame replacement costs 800–2,500 PLN depending on material and size.
Cause 3 – Multi-Point Lock Misalignment
Entry doors use multi-point locks: one handle turn engages bolts at 3–5 points simultaneously. After years of use, the bolts and their keeper plates wear and no longer align cleanly — the door feels "heavy" to close or the key turns with resistance. Cost of adjustment or repair: 100–180 PLN. Full lock replacement: 300–600 PLN depending on brand and model.
Cause 4 – Failed Threshold Seal
The threshold seal (or automatic drop seal) protects against draughts, sound and rain ingress at the door bottom. After 8–15 years it hardens, crumbles or the automatic mechanism loses its travel. Cold draughts at floor level, noise from the stairwell, or water under the door in heavy rain are the tell-tale signs. Threshold seal replacement: 80–150 PLN.
Quick Self-Diagnosis Before Calling a Technician
Close the door and check for light gaps around the perimeter. Lift the handle to see if the door closes more easily (hinge problem). Observe the lock bolts extending — do they align cleanly with their keeper plates? Run the paper test at the threshold. 3D hinges with a visible side cover can be self-adjusted with an Allen key; multi-point lock repair and frame correction require a specialist.
