Do windows need annual service before the heating season? Not always. See which symptoms should not wait until autumn, what cold weather may reveal and when the season is only a reminder to inspect.
The heating season is a useful reminder to look at window condition, but it should not be a deadline for postponing an existing fault. If a sash starts rubbing in summer or the handle suddenly becomes harder to use, there is no technical reason to wait for autumn.
Conversely, a sound window with no new symptoms does not need automatic “winter adjustment” just because the heating season is approaching.
The best service timing follows the condition of the window and the symptom, not a single date in the calendar.
No single rule says every window must be adjusted before each winter. If the sash closes correctly, the handle works as before and there are no new leaks or visible damage, the season itself is not a diagnosis.
Arrange service when the sash rubs heavily, needs lifting to close, the handle stops controlling the mechanism correctly, visible hardware is damaged or the sash becomes unstable. A cracked seal, persistent fogging between panes or recurring water around the window should also be assessed without waiting for cold weather.
Mechanical symptoms can be assessed regardless of outdoor temperature: rubbing, changed handle operation, visible seal damage and hardware behaviour. If a sound sash needs alignment, window adjustment may be appropriate; physically damaged seals may require seal replacement.
A larger indoor-outdoor temperature difference can make local cold-air movement easier to feel. That does not mean the cold caused the fault. Condensation on the room-side surface may also become more common in colder weather and should not be confused with persistent fogging between panes.
A draught can come from the seal, sash position, hardware or another joint. Increasing compression without identifying the cause may fail to solve the problem and can unnecessarily load the seal and mechanism.

A mechanical symptom exists now: diagnose it now. There is visible seal damage: assess it without waiting for a strong draught. The symptom appears only in cold or windy weather: note the conditions and exact location. The window works correctly: do not adjust it simply to “set it for winter”.
Large, heavy balcony sashes should not be treated exactly like small windows. If they drop, rub heavily or need lifting to close, assess them as balcony door repair rather than copying settings from another sash.
