Catches for Balcony & Terrace Doors

A balcony-door catch and a stop or holder used to retain the sash may look like similar accessories from the user's perspective, but they do not always perform the same function. A balcony-door catch works with the sash and frame to retain a nearly closed door. A stop, sash brake or holder may instead be used to keep the sash in a defined position.

We therefore do not select an accessory solely because it is described as a “magnet” or “door stop”. We first identify the function required, the door construction and a solution that can be fitted without interfering with the existing hardware.

What does a balcony-door catch do?

Balcony-door hardware systems can include catches that retain the sash in a nearly closed position without fully locking the door.

The exact operating principle depends on the hardware system and the specific component. We do not assume that every catch works in the same way or suits every profile.

When is a stop, sash brake or holder the better solution?

If the aim is to keep the sash open in a defined position, a door stop, sash brake or holder may be the appropriate solution. That is a different function from a classic balcony-door catch that retains the sash near the frame.

Before fitting, we therefore establish whether the user wants to retain a nearly closed door, limit uncontrolled movement or keep the sash open.

Does a catch protect the door from wind?

A catch or suitable retaining device can reduce unintended sash movement, but it does not replace properly closing and locking the door. We do not quote one universal wind speed that every product can withstand because the load depends on sash size, building exposure, wind direction, fixing method and the specific solution.

In strong winds, the door should be properly closed. A retaining accessory is not a substitute for locking the door when wind conditions are strong.

Can a catch be fitted to an existing balcony door?

Some hardware systems provide components that can be fitted or retrofitted to existing balcony doors, but suitability depends on the profile, hardware, dimensions and fixing position. Compatibility is checked for the particular construction.

Before fitting, we inspect the relevant door components and choose a fixing position that works with the existing hardware.

A catch does not replace door adjustment or repair

If the sash has dropped, rubs, has play or closes unevenly, the issue is not simply the absence of a catch. The appropriate service may be balcony door adjustment.

If a hinge, hardware component or another part is damaged, the appropriate service is balcony door repair rather than fitting a new catch.
