Locking Window Handles

A locking window handle lets you block normal handle operation with a key. This type of handle is primarily used when controlled window opening is needed, for example in a home with young children, or as an additional security element on a window accessible from the ground floor, balcony or terrace.

We do not treat the handle itself as a complete burglary-protection system. It is one component of the window, and its actual performance depends on the particular model and the manufacturer's documentation.

What does a key-lock window handle do?

When the locking mechanism is engaged, the handle should not be freely moved to the open position without being unlocked. This can restrict accidental or unwanted use of the handle from inside the room. Some models also provide an additional security function, but this does not establish a resistance class for the complete window.

Locking handles and child-safety use

A locking handle can be a practical way to control window opening in a home with children. Before fitting, however, it is important to establish whether the user needs to restrict full opening only or particular handle positions as well. Operation depends on the handle model and the existing hardware, so we do not describe all locking handles as working in the same way.

Locking handles and burglary protection

A locked handle can make handle operation more difficult after access to the inside has been gained, but burglary resistance of the complete window also depends on the hardware, locking points, glazing, profile and installation. How do we select a locking handle?

Before replacement we check the fixing arrangement, spindle, interaction with the existing mechanism and the function required by the user. We do not select a handle on appearance alone. If you only need a standard handle without a lock, see window handles.

Selected systems are also available with several handles operated by the same key. We do not assume this option is available in every range and confirm it for the specific product.

When is handle replacement not enough?

If the handle is unusually stiff, stops in an abnormal position or the mechanism does not lock correctly, the handle may not be the root cause. We first check sash and hardware operation. If the issue is caused by settings, the correct route may be window adjustment; if a mechanism fault is found, see window repair.
