Wood windows need more care than PVC – but when maintained well, they outlast everything. Fogging, drafts, sticking sashes: these are signs of maintenance overdue, not structural failure. Most wood window problems are solved in a single visit.
Why do wood windows fog up and lose their seal?
Wood reacts to humidity and temperature changes. In summer, frames swell slightly. In winter, they shrink. Over years, this movement gradually loosens hinges, compresses gaskets unevenly, and shifts the sash geometry. The result: fogging on the glass, visible condensation at the frame edge, and cold air coming through corners.
This is not a defect – it is natural material behaviour that requires periodic adjustment to compensate.
What wood window repair includes
Technician performs: hinge adjustment (vertical, horizontal, depth), gasket condition assessment and replacement if needed, compression level setting, frame sealing at critical points, and hardware cleaning and lubrication.
For older wood windows: the technician also checks for rot at hinge mounting points and assesses whether the frame still holds adjustment or needs structural reinforcement.
When is adjustment not enough?
If the frame itself has deformed beyond the adjustment range of the hardware (typically +/- 3 mm), or if the wood at hinge points has deteriorated, adjustment alone will not hold. In these cases the technician explains the options: hinge relocation, frame patching, or targeted replacement of the most affected section.

Window won't close in summer? That's the wood moving – but check the hinges
Wood swells in high humidity. If resistance only appears in summer – hinge adjustment with the right allowance is all you need. Do not sand the frame yourself.
Winter draughts – it's the seals, not the window
Wooden windows can draught in winter due to contracted wood and worn seals. Replacing the seals with flexible ones – more resistant to temperature changes – solves the problem.
Hardware corrosion in damp rooms
Kitchen, bathroom, basement – steel hardware on wooden windows corrodes faster. It's worth cleaning and lubricating the hardware at least once a year.
Condensation on the glass – it's not the wooden window's fault
Condensation on the inside of the glass is caused by excessive indoor humidity – not a window defect. Condensation between the panes means the glazing unit is damaged.
Misting between panes – replace the unit, not the window
A failed glazing unit in a wooden window can be replaced without replacing the frame. A good-quality wooden frame can last another 20–30 years.
