Window no longer closing as it used to, handle suddenly harder to turn, sash rubbing the frame, draught when shut, or a problem with the glass? Professional window repair starts with one question: what is actually causing the symptom?

The same user-visible problem can result from sash alignment, a gasket, hardware, the locking mechanism, the insulating glass unit or a leak outside the sash itself. Repair should therefore begin with diagnosis, not with changing settings or replacing the first component that appears suspicious.

That is why we do not start by replacing parts “just in case”. A technician inspects the construction, explains the cause and only then recommends the repair scope. Window repair starts with the right diagnosis

The most common mistake is to treat a symptom as the name of a failed component. A draught does not automatically mean a failed gasket. A stiff handle does not automatically mean a failed handle. A rubbing sash does not automatically mean that one hinge screw needs turning.

During diagnostics we check sash position and geometry, hinges and hardware, locking points, gasket condition, handle operation and the location of any air leakage. If the problem concerns the glass, we also assess the glazing unit. This determines whether the correct solution is adjustment, mechanism repair, gasket replacement, glazing replacement or another service.

Which symptoms commonly lead to window servicing?

• The sash rubs the frame or threshold — sash position, hinges and geometry need to be checked.
• The handle needs excessive force or stops in an unusual position — the cause may be sash alignment, locking resistance or a hardware fault.
• The window will not close or lock evenly around the perimeter — sash, keeps and hardware interaction need assessment.
• You feel air movement with the window shut — the source can be the gasket, compression, geometry or a joint outside the sash perimeter.
• The sash will not tilt or is stuck in an incorrect position — forcing the handle is not the answer; the mechanism should be checked first.
• The glass is cracked or there is persistent fogging between the panes — the problem concerns the glazing rather than hardware adjustment.
• A balcony door has dropped, rubs or is difficult to close — geometry, hinges, locking and mechanism operation need diagnosis.

This is why window service and repair should begin with diagnostics. A symptom shows us where to investigate, but it is not a diagnosis by itself.

Adjustment or mechanism repair? They are not the same service

If the hardware components are serviceable and the problem comes from sash position, locking or adjustable compression, window adjustment may be the right solution. Its purpose is to restore correct interaction between sash, frame and hardware, not to conceal a mechanical failure.

If a gearbox, drive rod, corner component, hinge or another hardware part is damaged, adjustment will not restore it. The correct service is then hardware or mechanism repair. Good diagnostics prevents both unnecessary replacement of a functioning mechanism and repeated adjustment of a component that is already damaged.

A draught through a closed window – gasket, compression or another joint?

A draught is one of the most misleading window symptoms. The gasket may indeed be damaged, permanently deformed or no longer make proper contact. In that case, gasket replacement is appropriate. But not every air leak originates at the gasket.

If the sash is misaligned, geometry or compression may be responsible. If air enters at the connection between the frame and its surroundings, the correct solution may be window sealing, not greater hardware compression. We therefore do not use a “draught = new gaskets” rule. We locate the source first.

The handle is stiff, loose or moves without the expected result

The handle is only one part of the operating system. Its movement is transferred through the locking mechanism, so unusual handle behaviour can have several causes. If it suddenly requires much greater force, turns without producing the expected sash movement or stops before the closed position, the handle alone should not be treated as the diagnosis.

We check the handle and its fixing, but also gearbox operation, locking points, keeps and sash position. If the window is completely jammed, the priority may be safe emergency opening before the underlying mechanism is repaired.

Condensation on the glass and moisture between panes are different problems

Condensation on a glass surface is not the same as persistent moisture between the panes of an insulating glass unit. Surface condensation can occur under particular temperature and humidity conditions. Fogging between the panes of a sealed insulating glass unit, however, indicates a problem with the unit seal.

Hardware adjustment or replacement of the sash gasket will not repair a failed glazing unit. After checking the construction, the appropriate solution may be insulating glass unit replacement without replacing the complete window.

PVC, timber and aluminium window repair

Frame material matters, but it does not identify the hardware or configuration installed in an individual window. PVC window repair, timber-window repair and aluminium-window repair therefore begin with identification of the actual construction and failed component.

Repairing a tilt window that is stuck in the wrong position

A tilt-and-turn sash that will not return from tilt to the closed position should not be diagnosed by forcing the handle. If the sash behaves as if it were both open and tilted, refuses to change position or becomes stuck, its alignment and tilt-and-turn mechanism need to be checked.

Depending on the cause, the solution can involve correct sash positioning, adjustment of hardware interaction or replacement of a damaged component. We do not assume that one particular part is responsible from the symptom alone. This is exactly where an experienced window technician prevents trial-and-error changes and unnecessary replacement.

Window and balcony-door repair in one request

If the same property also has problems with balcony doors, it is useful to report them together with the windows. Balcony doors can rub, drop, close unevenly or develop problems with locking and handle operation. Diagnostics cover geometry, hinges, locking points and the mechanism responsible for opening and closing.

When is repairing one component not enough?

We do not make the decision from window age alone. An older construction may still have serviceable components, while a relatively new window can have a specific fault. We do not use automatic rules such as “gaskets must be replaced after X years” or “hardware must be replaced after Y years”.

Repair is appropriate when correct operation can be restored through adjustment, sealing, maintenance or replacement of the specific failed component. If the problem concerns construction geometry beyond normal hardware adjustment, a separate scope may involve geometry restoration. If the construction has a problem that cannot be safely solved within the service scope, the technician should explain that clearly rather than adding further work without addressing the cause.

An original part starts with correct system identification

We work with all profile types and manufacturers. The window brand alone is not enough to select a part because similar constructions can contain different hardware families and mechanism configurations. We identify the system and the failed component first.

When parts are required, we use new, original manufacturer parts sourced through our suppliers. We do not install aftermarket substitutes or second-hand components. If the correct part is not available during the visit, we explain the next step rather than fitting an arbitrary substitute.

Adjustment and maintenance are different tasks

Serviceable hardware requires periodic care according to the instructions for the relevant system. Cleaning and lubricating moving components helps maintain smooth operation, but it cannot repair a broken part or correct sash geometry. Likewise, adjustment does not replace hardware maintenance.

If the mechanism functions correctly but needs routine care, the appropriate service is hardware cleaning and lubrication. A broader inspection and maintenance of serviceable constructions belongs to window service. If the problem concerns sash position or geometry, a different scope is required. Preventive maintenance and repair of an actual fault should not be treated as the same job.

How much does window repair cost?

There is no single meaningful “window repair price” because the term covers different services. Current starting prices depend on the actual service required.

Window adjustment starts from PLN 50, gasket replacement from PLN 20, mechanism replacement from PLN 50, window sealing from PLN 38, cleaning and lubrication from PLN 42, glazing unit replacement from PLN 225, geometry restoration from PLN 170 and emergency opening from PLN 225.

What information helps when you report a window fault?

You do not need to know the profile name or hardware model. The most useful information is how the window behaves: where the sash rubs, when the handle becomes resistant, whether the problem occurs during opening, tilting or closing, where you feel a draught and whether moisture is on the glass surface or between the panes.

If you know the profile or hardware manufacturer, you can provide that information. It also helps to mention whether several windows or balcony doors are affected. A window specialist should still confirm the actual system and cause before selecting parts or defining the repair scope.
