Glass Unit Replacement
The glass unit is the part of the window responsible for thermal and acoustic insulation. It consists of two or three hermetically sealed panes with an insulating chamber filled with air or inert gas, usually argon. Since the glass unit covers the largest area of the entire window, it determines how effectively windows retain heat in your home.
When is glass unit replacement necessary?
The glass unit should be replaced if:
- condensation forms between the panes,
- the glass is cracked or broken,
- the window lets in cold air or causes drafts,
- increased noise from outside is noticeable,
- moisture or mold appears around the window frame.
In such cases, replacing hardware or gaskets won't help – the glass unit itself needs to be replaced.
Why replace only the glass unit?
Replacing the glass unit is a much more economical solution than replacing the entire window. Window frames usually remain in good condition and don't require intervention, so only the glass part is replaced. This allows you to restore effective thermal and acoustic insulation, avoid complicated finishing work, and significantly reduce heating costs.
How to choose the right glass unit?
When choosing a glass unit, pay attention to several technical parameters that directly affect thermal and acoustic insulation in your home:
- Number of panes: double and triple-glazed units are available. Triple-glazed units provide lower heat loss and are more commonly chosen for residential buildings.
- Number of low-E panes: double-glazed units typically use one low-E pane, while triple-glazed units use one or two. The more low-E panes, the better the thermal insulation in winter and summer.
- Spacer bars between panes: plastic thermal spacers improve thermal insulation and reduce condensation at the edges of the unit, ensuring more even temperature around the window.
- Gap between panes: the optimal width of the inter-pane space is 12 to 20 mm. Too small gaps (e.g., 8–10 mm) can worsen insulation properties even in triple-glazed units.
- Argon or other gas filling: gas-filled units are warmer – argon can improve insulation by up to 20% compared to units filled with regular air.
