Window adjustment – diagnosis, precise alignment and sealing
Does your window rub against the frame, has the handle become harder to turn, does the sash no longer close as it used to, or can you feel a draught with the window shut? Adjustment often solves these symptoms, but they do not all have the same cause. Before changing any setting, we check sash alignment, hinges and hardware, locking points, compression and gasket condition. Only then can we tell what actually needs correcting.
Professional window adjustment restores the correct interaction between the sash, frame and hardware. If the components are serviceable, accurate adjustment can restore smooth opening and closing, even compression and reliable locking without replacing parts unnecessarily. We adjust PVC, timber and aluminium windows as well as balcony doors. Technician call-out and initial diagnostics are free, and window adjustment starts from 50 PLN.
How do you know when a window needs adjustment?
The best indicator is not the age of the window or the season but a change in how it operates. If a sash used to move freely and now needs lifting, pushing or extra force on the handle, it is worth identifying the cause before the problem becomes more pronounced.
- The sash rubs against the frame or threshold — its position may have changed and the hinges or overall alignment may need correction.
- The handle is difficult to turn — the cause may be sash position, excessive resistance at the locking points or a fault in the mechanism itself.
- The window does not close or lock evenly — we check sash position, keeps and the operation of the hardware around the perimeter.
- You feel a draught with the window closed — compression adjustment can help when the source is the interface between sash and frame. A worn gasket or a leak between frame and wall requires a different solution.
- The sash will not tilt or change position correctly — forcing the handle is not the answer; the alignment and mechanism should be checked first.
- A balcony door has dropped and rubs — larger, heavier sashes may also require alignment and hardware correction.
The key point is simple: a symptom tells us where to investigate, but it is not a diagnosis. A draught does not always mean a failed gasket, a stiff handle does not always mean a failed handle, and a rubbing sash cannot always be fixed by turning one hinge screw.
What does professional window adjustment actually involve?
Adjustment is not a single turn of an Allen key. A tilt-and-turn window works as a system: the sash must sit correctly in relation to the frame, the hinges must guide it in the intended position, and the locking elements must engage their keeps without excessive resistance. The available adjustments depend on the construction and hardware system installed.
1. We check sash position and alignment
We assess whether the sash has dropped, shifted relative to the frame, and whether the clearances between sash and frame are appropriate for the construction. If the geometry is outside the range that normal hardware adjustment can correct, changing the hardware settings alone may not provide a lasting result and the underlying cause must be identified.
2. We adjust hinges and sash guidance
Depending on the hardware system, height, lateral position and hinge-side settings may be adjustable. Different systems do not necessarily use the same adjustment points or ranges, so settings should not be copied blindly from one hardware family to another.
3. We check locking and sash compression
Many perimeter hardware systems allow contact pressure to be adjusted at locking elements. The goal, however, is not “maximum pressure”. It is correct and reasonably even contact between sash and gasket while the handle continues to operate properly. Excessive pressure can increase closing resistance and is not a cure for every air leak.
4. We inspect gaskets and mechanism operation
If a gasket is damaged, permanently deformed or no longer seals for a reason unrelated to sash position, adjustment alone may not be enough. The same applies to a worn or damaged hardware component. Instead of masking the symptom, we recommend the appropriate service, such as gasket replacement or hardware or mechanism repair.
5. We verify the result
After correction, the window should open, tilt, close and lock without unnecessary resistance. We check handle operation, sash position and sealing contact. The purpose of adjustment is to solve the actual operating problem, not merely to change a setting.
Window compression adjustment — more is not better
This is one of the most misunderstood parts of window adjustment. In hardware systems that provide compression adjustment, locking components can be set to change how the sash engages the gasket. Manufacturers use different designs and adjustment ranges, so there is no single universal cam position that is correct for every window.
If air is entering around a closed sash, increasing compression only makes sense when diagnostics show that the existing compression setting is the cause. If the gasket is worn, the sash is misaligned beyond the relevant adjustment, or the leak is between the frame and wall, increasing locking pressure does not remove the source of the problem.
Good adjustment is not maximum adjustment. It is the setting that lets the window close correctly, allows the gasket to work as intended, and avoids excessive resistance at the handle and locking points.
Hinge adjustment — when a sash drops or starts rubbing
If the lower edge of a sash begins to catch the frame, its position may need correction. Depending on the installed hardware, hinges can provide adjustment in several directions. The method and available range must be matched to the specific system, including both visible and concealed hinge arrangements.
Not every rubbing sash simply needs to be “lifted”. If the sash or frame is distorted, the problem lies outside the normal adjustment range, or a hardware component is damaged, further setting changes may not remove the cause. We therefore establish why the alignment has changed before correcting it.
PVC window adjustment
On PVC windows, adjustment mainly concerns the interaction between the sash, frame and hardware: sash position, hinges, locking and, where the hardware provides for it, compression. The PVC profile brand alone does not determine the adjustment procedure. Two windows built with profiles from the same brand can use different hardware, so we identify the actual system before working on it.
We service all profile types and manufacturers. Our work includes hardware from manufacturers such as Roto, Winkhaus, MACO and SIEGENIA, but the manufacturer name is only a starting point — the specific hardware family and configuration matter. This is particularly important with older windows, concealed hinges and constructions that have already been adjusted at several points.
“Winter mode” and “summer mode” — what is actually true?
Online guides often claim that every PVC window should be switched to “winter mode” in autumn by setting maximum compression and then returned to “summer mode” in spring. That is an oversimplification.
Some hardware systems do allow sash compression to be changed at their locking elements. That does not mean every window has two manufacturer-defined seasonal modes or that maximum compression is the correct winter setting. The method depends on the hardware installed, and the correct setting should follow the way the window operates and seals rather than the calendar alone.
If a window closes smoothly, seals correctly and works as intended, there is no reason to increase compression merely because the heating season is approaching. If a draught appears, the first step is to locate its source. Only then can we determine whether the answer is compression adjustment, sash alignment, window sealing or another repair.
The practical rule is straightforward: adjust for correct window operation, not for the name of a season.
When is adjustment not enough?
Adjustment is effective when a problem can be corrected by changing the settings of serviceable components. It cannot repair every fault. Diagnostics separate cases that genuinely need adjustment from those requiring repair or replacement of a specific component.
- Worn or damaged gasket — changing compression cannot restore material that has lost its required properties.
- Damaged hardware or mechanism — a broken or excessively worn component cannot be adjusted back into working condition.
- Cracked or failed insulating glass unit — the glazing needs diagnosis and, where required, glazing unit replacement.
- A persistent geometry problem — if normal adjustment cannot position the sash correctly, the underlying cause needs a different repair.
- A leak between frame and wall — sash adjustment cannot seal a defect outside the sash-to-frame interface.
This is why we start with diagnostics. You do not need to decide in advance whether to order adjustment, a gasket or a mechanism repair. Describe what the window is doing; we identify the cause.
Can you adjust a window yourself?
You can safely observe many symptoms yourself: where the sash rubs, whether the handle resistance changes, whether a gasket is visibly damaged, or whether closing feels different at one part of the frame. The risk begins when several adjustment points are changed without identifying the hardware system, or when compression is increased simply to see what happens. Hardware families use different instructions and adjustment limits.
If a window operates correctly, routine care can be carried out according to the relevant manufacturer instructions. If the sash rubs, the handle jams, the window will not lock, or the problem returns after previous adjustment, diagnosis is a better starting point than further trial-and-error changes.

How much does window adjustment cost?
Window adjustment starts from 50 PLN. The exact cost depends on the number and type of constructions, the adjustments required and whether diagnostics reveal a fault that needs additional repair. Technician call-out and initial diagnostics are free, and we provide the cost before starting paid work.
If adjustment is not enough, you do not need to guess which service to order next. After diagnosis we explain whether the problem concerns the gasket, mechanism, glazing or another component. Current starting prices for other services are available on our pricing page.

We provide window adjustment across our active service regions in Poland. You can check availability for your location on the cities and service areas page. Wherever the service is provided, the principle is the same: diagnosis first, then a clear explanation of the cause and cost, followed by adjustment after your approval.
Expert tips – Window adjustment
Practical guidance on recognising when adjustment is needed and when the fault requires a different repair
Start with the symptom, not the setting
A stiff handle, draught and rubbing sash can have different causes. Before changing settings, we check alignment, locking, compression and sealing condition.
Compression should not simply be maximised
Where the hardware provides compression adjustment, we set it for correct sash and gasket operation. More pressure will not repair a worn gasket or a leak between frame and wall.
There is no single adjustment interval
Adjust a window when its operation changes: rubbing, difficult closing, uneven locking or a sealing problem. Routine maintenance and corrective adjustment are different tasks.
When adjustment is not enough
A damaged mechanism, worn gasket, failed glazing unit or geometry problem outside the adjustment range requires the appropriate repair rather than further hardware adjustment.
“Winter mode” is an oversimplification
Not every window has two defined seasonal modes. Whether and how compression can be changed depends on the hardware system; a correctly operating, sealed window does not need changing simply because the season changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Key answers before booking window adjustment
Window adjustment starts from 50 PLN. The exact cost depends on the number and type of constructions and the corrections required. Technician call-out and initial diagnostics are free, and we provide the price before paid work begins.
Common signs include a sash rubbing the frame, increased handle resistance, uneven closing or locking, and a draught with the sash closed. These symptoms can have different causes, so we diagnose the window before adjusting it.
Yes, when the problem is caused by sash position or by compression that is adjustable in the installed hardware system. Adjustment cannot repair a worn gasket or a leak between the frame and wall.
No. Some hardware systems allow compression to be changed, but that does not create two universal seasonal modes for every window. The adjustment method depends on the specific hardware, and a correctly operating, sealed window does not need changing simply because the season changes.
There is no single mandatory interval for every window. Corrective adjustment is primarily needed when sash, handle, locking or sealing performance changes. Routine hardware maintenance should follow the instructions for the relevant system.
Simple actions depend on the specific hardware system. Without identifying it, avoid changing several adjustment points or applying maximum compression as a trial. If the sash rubs, the handle jams or the window will not lock correctly, diagnostics are a safer starting point.
When the mechanism is damaged, the gasket has lost its required properties, the glazing unit has failed, or the construction is outside the range of normal adjustment. After diagnostics we identify the appropriate repair rather than replacing serviceable parts unnecessarily.
Yes. Technician call-out and initial diagnostics are free. After inspecting the window, we explain the cause and provide the cost before paid work begins.
Yes. We adjust PVC, timber and aluminium windows from different manufacturers, as well as balcony-door constructions covered by this service. The adjustment method is matched to the individual construction and installed hardware system.
