Door Adjustment

Door adjustment is appropriate when components are serviceable and the issue is caused by sash alignment, hinges, compression or locking-point operation within the correction range provided by the specific system. If a door rubs, becomes harder to close, the handle operates with more resistance or compression becomes uneven, we begin with free diagnostics rather than adjusting it by trial and error.

We service supported PVC and aluminium constructions. We do not service external entrance doors or HST systems. When a request belongs to a specialist balcony-door scope or requires repair of a failed component, we route it to the appropriate service.

What are the signs that a door may need adjustment?

• the sash rubs against the threshold or frame;
• more force is needed to close the door;
• the handle or locking operation has become harder;
• compression against the gasket is uneven;
• locking points do not align correctly with the strikers;
• the way the door operates has clearly changed without a visibly broken component.

The symptom alone does not determine the solution. Rubbing can result from alignment, but it can also be caused by a problem beyond the hardware adjustment range. A draught can point to compression, a gasket or another leakage point. We therefore separate an adjustment issue from a fault that requires repair before work begins.

What does door adjustment include?

The scope depends on the construction and fitted hardware. After identifying the system, we inspect the components related to the reported symptom and make only the corrections provided for that solution.

Sash and hinge alignment

We check the sash position in relation to the frame, clearances and rubbing points. Where the hinge design provides an adjustment range, we correct the sash position without forcing it beyond the limits of the system.

Compression and locking points

We check how the locking points engage with the strikers and how evenly the sash compresses the gasket. When hardware settings are the cause, we correct them so the door closes and locks properly.

Handle and hardware mechanism

We establish whether handle resistance comes from sash and locking alignment or from a failed mechanism. If a component is not operating correctly, adjustment is not a substitute for repair or replacement.

Functional check after adjustment

After the corrections, we check opening, closing, locking and sash operation through the available movement range to confirm the result of the service.

PVC, plastic and aluminium door adjustment

Frame material alone does not determine the adjustment method. PVC doors, often described as plastic doors, and aluminium doors can use different hinges, hardware and mechanisms. We therefore identify the actual construction and the components responsible for the symptom before making corrections.

We work with supported constructions across brands; the identified system determines the adjustment method, not the profile label alone.

Door hinge adjustment – when is it the right solution?

Hinge adjustment helps only when the hinge provides a permitted correction range and the hinge position is actually responsible for the sash misalignment. Not every rubbing door simply needs to be “lifted”, and excessive correction can impair locking or move the problem elsewhere.

If the sash still does not operate correctly after proper alignment, diagnostics may identify another component or a geometry issue.

Compression adjustment – why not simply set it tighter?

Compression should match the construction, hardware and condition of the components rather than be set to maximum. Too little may reduce proper contact, while too much can increase handle resistance and load on the mechanism. We therefore change compression only when diagnostics shows that the setting is the actual cause of the problem.

Sliding doors and PSK – identify the system first

Sliding systems differ in construction and should not be treated as one technical category. We service confirmed solutions within our scope, including selected PSK systems. We do not service HST systems. The construction and hardware are identified before the scope is confirmed.

If the issue is caused by a failed component, adjustment is not a substitute for repair and the request is routed to the appropriate service.

Can adjustment stop a draught?

It can when leakage is caused by sash alignment or compression. A draught does not always mean compression should be increased. If diagnostics confirms a worn or damaged gasket, gasket replacement may be the correct service.

Adjustment versus geometry restoration – where is the boundary?

Adjustment uses the correction points provided by the hardware and hinges of the specific system. If the problem lies outside that range, further tightening is not the right solution. Diagnostics may instead indicate geometry restoration or repair of a failed component.

When is adjustment not enough?

If a hinge, mechanism, handle, lock or another component is cracked, worn or fails to transfer movement correctly, the issue moves from adjustment into repair. The general diagnostic and repair route is described on our door repair page.

When replacement is required, we use new original parts from the correct manufacturer intended for the identified system, sourced from our suppliers. We do not fit aftermarket substitutes or used parts.

Can you adjust the door yourself?

You can safely check where the sash rubs, whether the handle operates smoothly and whether the problem occurs throughout the movement. Adjustment of hinges, compression or locking points should, however, follow the design of the specific system. Excessive correction can increase resistance, impair locking or place unnecessary load on the hardware.
