Replacing old draughty windows with modern PVC units is one of the best investments in home comfort and energy efficiency. There is, however, a side effect rarely mentioned at the point of sale: the new window is so airtight that natural air infiltration disappears. Old draughts were wasteful, but they did supply fresh air and remove moisture. Without them, CO₂ levels build up, relative humidity rises, and mould appears on walls and around window frames. The solution is a trickle vent.
What a Trickle Vent Is
A trickle vent (nawiewnik okienny in Polish) is a small unit fitted into the top of the window frame or head section of the frame, providing controlled airflow from outside into the room without opening the window and without draughts. It consists of an external housing with an insect screen, a flow channel with a variable opening, a flow controller (manual, pressure-controlled or humidity-controlled), and an internal grille. The unit is typically 20–40 cm wide and 3–5 cm tall, fitted without touching the glazing.
Humidity-Controlled vs Pressure-Controlled Vents
Pressure-controlled (acoustic) vent: The opening is fixed or manually adjustable. Airflow depends on the pressure difference between inside and outside (wind strength and gravity ventilation stack). Advantages: simple, low cost (20–50 PLN), no moving parts. Disadvantages: minimal airflow on still days; too much airflow in strong winds.
Humidity-controlled vent: Responds to indoor relative humidity. When humidity rises (cooking, bathing, breathing), the damper opens automatically; when the room is dry, it closes, reducing heat loss. The control mechanism uses a hygroscopic tape – no electronics or batteries needed. Advantages: automatic control matched to actual needs, lower winter heat loss, natural protection against damp and mould. Cost: 80–200 PLN each. Recommendation: for homes with gravity ventilation, humidity-controlled vents are clearly the better choice.
Why Airtight Windows Need Trickle Vents
Gravity (natural) ventilation works by air entering at low level (historically through window gaps) and leaving through kitchen and bathroom extract ducts, rising up ventilation shafts. When airtight windows remove the air inlet, the stack still tries to draw air but has no source – stack effect weakens, ventilation effectively stops. The first symptoms: stuffy bedrooms in the morning, condensation on windows in winter, mould in room corners and behind wardrobes. A trickle vent restores the inlet side of the balance.
When Installation Is Compulsory or Strongly Recommended
Under Polish building regulations, trickle vents are required in new buildings with gravity ventilation and highly airtight windows (meeting WT 2021 energy standards). In older housing stock (1970s–90s blocks, tenement buildings), they are not legally mandatory when replacing windows, but are strongly recommended by every responsible installer. Fitting airtight windows without adding trickle vents is a recipe for damp and mould within 2–3 years.
