Why Does the Window Handle Spin Freely? Causes and Diagnosis
A window handle that spins freely without resistance is a classic sign of a broken spindle (krzyżak). The good news: in most cases the repair takes 15–20 minutes and requires no specialist tools.
You turn the window handle and it spins freely like a toy – no resistance, no movement from the hardware. The window is stuck, you can neither open nor lock it properly. This is one of the most common PVC window faults, and fortunately one of the easiest to repair.
Why Does the Handle Spin? Anatomy of the Problem
A window handle is not just a grip – it transfers rotational force to the entire multipoint hardware mechanism. The chain is: handle → spindle (square or multi-sided pin) → hardware drive → locking bolts. The handle and hardware are connected by the spindle (Polish: krzyżak) – a square-section pin that engages simultaneously with the square socket in the handle and the square drive in the hardware. When the spindle is intact, turning the handle moves the hardware. When the spindle breaks or strips, the handle spins without engagement.
Three Causes of a Freely Spinning Handle
1. Broken spindle: Budget handles use zinc-alloy spindles that can fracture after years of use, especially if the handle is jerked. Result: handle spins 360° with zero resistance, hardware doesn't move at all. 2. Stripped square drive: Instead of snapping, the square profile gradually rounds off – the handle slips through the full rotation. Typical progression: increasing handle force needed → slipping under load → free spinning. 3. Loose mounting screws: If the two mounting screws under the rose have loosened, the handle shifts axially and the spindle misses its engagement in the hardware drive. Easiest DIY fix: retighten the screws.
How to Remove a Window Handle
1. Set the handle to the "tilt" or "open" position. 2. Find and release the decorative rose (escutcheon) at the handle base – it usually slides upward or rotates to a release point. 3. Unscrew the two mounting screws (Phillips or 4 mm Allen) hidden under the rose. 4. Pull the handle straight off the profile. 5. Inspect the spindle – look for fractures or a rounded square profile.
Replace Spindle vs. Replace Full Handle
Replace spindle only when: the spindle is broken but the handle's square socket is undamaged. Replacement spindles cost 5–15 PLN and must match the size (7 mm or 8 mm square) and length for your hardware system. Replace the full handle when: the handle's own square socket is stripped (a new spindle will strip again), or the handle is physically damaged. When choosing a new handle, check the screw pitch (usually 43 mm), neck length (matched to PVC profile thickness) and hand (left/right). When to Call a Technician
After replacing the spindle and handle, if the hardware still doesn't function correctly – the multipoint mechanism is damaged, not the handle. If the window is stiff or catches during opening – the cause is in the hardware or hinges. If mounting screws won't hold – the thread in the PVC profile may be stripped, requiring a threaded insert.
