When to Replace a Window Handle
Simple test: close the window and try turning the handle in the closed position. If it spins without resistance and the sash doesn't lock – the square spindle has slipped from the multipoint mechanism, or the internal coupling is worn. This is both a security risk and a draught issue. Other signs: visible wobble (loose screws or worn spindle mounting), visible cracks, handle not reaching the tilt or closed position, or corrosion.
Three Key Measurements Before Buying
Before purchasing, measure: (1) Fixing hole centres – distance between the two screw holes in the rose plate (standard: 43, 57 or 84 mm); (2) Spindle size – 7×7 mm for standard PVC, 9×9 mm for aluminium or older windows; (3) Neck length – distance from rose plate surface to spindle axis. With these three dimensions, correct handle selection is straightforward.

Standard rose-plate handles are straightforward to replace: remove the decorative cover (prise gently from the side), unscrew two screws, pull the handle straight out, insert the new one with the spindle aligned, tighten screws evenly.
