What You Can Do Yourself

Handle replacement: usually DIY – if you know what to buy. A window handle is held by two screws through a plastic rose. Unscrew the old, fit the new with the same spindle size (e.g. 7 mm). Problem: if the handle spins freely, the cause may be a worn internal spindle, not the handle itself – harder to replace yourself.
Basic hardware adjustment: minimal adjustment (e.g. sash lightly touching seal on one side) can be attempted with a 4 mm hex key. But full 3D adjustment – height, horizontal, compression – requires knowing the sequence of adjustment points. Get it wrong and you fix one problem and create two more.
What NOT to Do Yourself
Glass unit replacement: a glass unit weighs 8–25 kg depending on size and type. Removal and installation requires glass suction cups, distance wedges and knowledge of correct resealing. Multipoint lock hardware: the multipoint system is 10–15 elements connected in series. Replacing even one (e.g. a broken bolt) requires identifying the hardware brand, often disassembling the whole sash, and recalibrating after reassembly. Error: a window that will not close or open.
Scissor hinge replacement: the scissor hinge is both a hinge and a tilt guide simultaneously. Correct installation requires precise sizing matched to the sash weight and dimensions. A poorly fitted hinge means a drooping sash or broken tilt function.
Window-to-wall joint resealing: applying silicone from outside looks simple. The mistakes: covering old silicone instead of removing it; using interior silicone instead of exterior; wrong bead diameter. Result: water penetrates under the new seal.
