Aluminium windows have a reputation for being maintenance-free. Mostly that is true – aluminium does not rot, swell or deform thermally like PVC. But after 10–15 years of use, even alu has its typical faults. Which ones? And what to do about them?
Aluminium windows cost more than PVC – and usually serve longer without intervention. But no window lasts forever. Here are the five faults aluminium window users most commonly report.
Problem 1: Condensation on the Glass
Older aluminium windows – especially pre-2000 – often had single or dual-chamber profiles without a thermal break. Such profiles are cold – external condensation on cold days, internal condensation in heated rooms. This is physics, not a defect. The only effective fix is replacement with a thermal-break profile (warm aluminium). If condensation appears between panes, that is a different problem: a failed glass unit requiring replacement. Problem 2: Stiff or Difficult to Open
Aluminium has minimal thermal deformation, so stiffness rarely comes from expansion. Most common causes: dry unlubricated hardware (scissor hinge stopped moving smoothly), debris in the guide channel, or detuned hardware where the sash rubs against the frame or seal. In most cases: clean channels, lubricate hardware, adjust. Aluminium hardware has a similar 3D adjustment system to PVC but requires appropriate hex keys.
Problem 3: Squeaking or Rattling
Squeaking on opening or closing is almost always dry hinges – apply lubricant and check if it stops. Rattling in wind is loose multipoint lock bolts or a seal that has lost elasticity and no longer holds the sash firmly closed.
Problem 4: Corroded Hardware and Handle
The aluminium profile is corrosion-resistant. But in aggressive environments – coastal, high-humidity urban, damp buildings – steel hardware elements can rust. Rust on lock bolts is not just cosmetic – corroded bolts seize or snap in winter. Hardware replacement for aluminium windows is possible but typically more expensive than for PVC due to specialist parts.
Problem 5: Worn Seals
Aluminium windows typically have two seals – perimeter and glazing seal. The perimeter seal wears like a PVC one: after 10–15 years it hardens and loses elasticity. Symptoms: draught with the window closed, external noise, water on the sill in driving rain. Seal replacement is possible but requires the correct size for aluminium profiles – different groove dimensions than PVC.
