How HST Doors Work – and Why They're Different
An ordinary sliding door moves horizontally on a track without changing height. When you turn an HST door handle, the sash first lifts (rises onto the running carriage), then slides. On closing, the handle is returned and the sash drops, pressing the full weight of the panel onto the EPDM seals. This mechanism delivers thermal and acoustic performance comparable to fixed glazing — which is why HST doors are standard in energy-efficient and passive buildings.
Most Common HST Door Faults
Worn running rollers – the most frequent fault. Rollers carry the full sash weight during sliding; as their bearings wear, sliding becomes heavy, squeaking and stuttering develop. Damaged or deformed track – the lower aluminium track is vulnerable to mechanical damage and galvanic corrosion; a bent track causes the sash to jam or jump. Worn EPDM seals – hardened, cracked seals fail to seal the heavy sash even when the mechanism is correct. Multipoint lock failure – worn lock rods, deformed catches or damaged handle gear cause incomplete locking or a stiff handle. Drive mechanism failure – worn gearing causes heavy handle resistance and inability to lift the sash correctly.
