Yet the peripheral fittings – hinges, multipoint lock bolts, tilt scissors and adjustment screws – determine whether a window seals tightly, tilts correctly and resists forced entry. What Peripheral Window Hardware Includes
Peripheral hardware (okucia obwodowe) runs along the edge of the sash and comprises: hinges (top, middle, bottom), multipoint lock bolts and catches, the tilt-and-turn scissors mechanism, the handle spindle housing, and built-in adjustment screws. All parts work as one system – play or a blockage in one place affects how the whole sash behaves. Common brands in Poland are Roto, Winkhaus, Siegenia and GU.
Warning Signs – When Hardware Needs Attention
Stiff handle or blockage mid-turn: More effort than a year ago, or the handle sticks halfway, usually means worn or corroded hardware. Forcing the handle can break the mechanism.
Sash play and dropping: Close the window and push the sash in all four directions. Movement above 2–3 mm means worn or misadjusted hinges – the seal no longer contacts the frame evenly.
Visible rust or white deposits: Quality hardware is galvanised, but moisture (bathrooms, coastal areas) accelerates corrosion. Rust penetrating the metal structure cannot be cleaned away – replacement is needed.
Complete blockage: A broken bolt or shifted catch requires professional repair; never force a locked sash.
Tilt function not working: Asymmetric tilting or a sash that won't tilt at all signals a worn tilt-scissors or a calibration issue.
