Aluminium Window Adjustment – What Makes It Different from PVC?
An aluminium window starts sticking or squeaking — and that's when it becomes clear that adjusting an aluminium system is fundamentally different from servicing PVC windows. Different material, different hinges, different tools.

Aluminium windows require a different approach to adjustment than PVC. The lower thermal expansion rate of aluminium profiles, combined with their higher thermal conductivity, means frames respond quickly to temperature changes — but move less overall. Attempting to adjust an aluminium window the same way as a PVC one risks permanently deforming the soft aluminium profile or stripping threaded adjustment points.
Signs Your Aluminium Window Needs Adjustment
The most common indicators are a heavy or stiff closing action, an uneven gap around the sash perimeter, visible scuff marks where the sash rubs the frame, draught from one corner only, or creaking sounds during temperature changes in the morning or evening. Any of these points to a sash that has shifted out of its optimal position.
Scissor Hinges vs. Integrated Concealed Hinges
Aluminium windows typically use one of two hinge systems. Scissor hinges (also called peripheral scissors) guide the sash at four points via upper and lower scissor arms — common in tilt-and-turn windows. Adjustment is made via set screws in the scissor arms and mounting blocks. Integrated concealed hinges, found in premium aluminium systems, are hidden entirely within the profile. They require access through service ports in the bottom profile and the correct hex key sizes specified by the system manufacturer (Schüco, Reynaers, Aliplast, Aluprof all differ). Using incorrect torque on concealed hinges strips threads in the aluminium profile — an expensive repair.
3D Adjustment – Three Axes
Correct adjustment covers three axes: up/down (vertical, corrects sash drop), left/right (horizontal, equalises gap width), and compression depth (how firmly the sash presses against the seal). All three interact — changing compression affects closing effort, and changing vertical position may affect corner sealing. Adjustments should be made sequentially and tested after each change.
What Not to Do
Never force an aluminium sash shut — aluminium deforms plastically and a bent profile cannot be fully straightened. Do not lubricate aluminium hardware with machine oil; it damages powder-coat lacquer and EPDM seals. Use only silicone-based lubricants. And never attempt adjustment of concealed hinges without knowing the specific system's adjustment ranges and screw specifications.
How Often to Adjust
Manufacturers recommend a service check annually. Windows in commercial buildings with high opening frequency benefit from a check every six to eight months. The ideal time is early autumn — after summer thermal stress, but before winter heating season when any draught causes real energy loss.
