Three Main Sources of Window Draughts
Window draughts have three typical causes that must be diagnosed separately. The first is worn perimeter gaskets – the rubber seals that harden, crack and lose elasticity over time. The second is a misaligned sash – when hinges wear or hardware needs adjustment, the sash no longer presses evenly against the frame, leaving gaps where the gasket loses contact. The third, often overlooked, is failed installation sealing around the frame – gaps between the frame and the masonry where installation foam or silicone has dried out and become air-permeable.
The Paper Test – How to Diagnose
Close the window over a folded sheet of paper. If the paper slides out with no resistance, the gasket is worn or the sash needs adjustment. If the paper tears when pulled, the seal is working and the draught source lies elsewhere – most likely around the frame.
Gasket Replacement
EPDM window gaskets last over 10 years when properly maintained but degrade faster under extreme temperature swings. Signs of a worn gasket: hard or crumbling texture, visible cracks, or the gasket falling out of its groove. Gasket replacement costs from 30 PLN per window and takes 15–30 minutes.
Installation Sealing
If the gasket is in good condition but draughts persist, the problem is likely in the installation sealing around the frame. Professional window sealing involves removing degraded foam or silicone and applying new vapour-barrier tape or silicone. This is especially important in buildings from the 1970s–90s where windows were installed with foam only. Correct installation sealing can reduce heat loss through windows by 30–40%.
