Cold air coming through a closed window is one of the most common complaints during winter. Before reaching for the phone or the tape roll, it's worth spending 10 minutes on a simple diagnosis. In most cases the fix costs 30–150 PLN – but only if you identify the correct cause first.
Three Different Causes of Window Draughts
Window draughts come from three completely different places, each requiring a different repair. Confusing them leads to spending money on the wrong fix.
Cause 1: Worn perimeter seal (gasket)
The EPDM perimeter seal runs in a groove along the full sash perimeter. Its job is to compress and fill the gap between sash and frame when the window is closed. Over time the rubber hardens, loses elasticity and stops filling the gap. Result: air passes through wherever the seal no longer presses. How to recognise: draughts distributed evenly at multiple points around the perimeter; the seal feels hard and rigid. Fix: EPDM seal replacement from 30 PLN.
Cause 2: Hardware compression too low
Window hardware has eccentric cams that control how firmly the sash presses against the frame. Over time, especially with heavy sashes or intensive use, the cams drift to the low-compression position. How to recognise: draught concentrated at corners or only on one side (typically near the handle); the seal looks good but isn't being compressed. Fix: Hardware compression adjustment from 50 PLN.
Cause 3: Failed installation seal
The gap between window frame and wall is filled with expanding foam and silicone. After years of thermal cycling, silicone can crack, peel or be damaged during renovation. How to recognise: cold air comes from the frame-to-wall joint, not the sash-to-frame joint; visible cracks in the silicone bead along the frame interior or exterior edge. The Paper Test – Step by Step
The most reliable home diagnostic method, requiring no tools. Close the window normally. Insert an A4 sheet halfway between sash and frame at several points: each side, top, bottom, near the handle. Pull the paper out. If it slides out with no resistance: no compression at that point – air can enter. Clear resistance: compression is correct. Repeat at every point around the perimeter and note where the paper moves freely. On a windy day you can also run your hand or a thin tissue strip along the frame edge.
How to Tell Seal from Hardware from Installation Gap
Seal: problem spread evenly around the full perimeter; rubber feels hard and cracked. Hardware: problem only in one section; seal is soft but not being pressed; manually pushing the sash at that spot eliminates the draught. Installation gap: cold comes from the frame–wall joint, not the sash–frame joint; visible cracks in silicone along the frame edge.
Is It Worth Fixing Quickly?
Yes. One draughty window in a flat can cost several hundred PLN extra in heating per winter. The full repair (seal + adjustment + installation sealing) costs 80–200 PLN – recovered in one heating season.
