How to Care for Wooden Windows – Maintenance, Impregnation and Long-Term Protection
Wooden windows are beautiful but demanding. Unlike PVC, wood responds to moisture and temperature – swelling in summer, shrinking in winter. Without regular maintenance and impregnation, wood cracks, rots and stops sealing. This guide explains what to do, when – and what genuinely cannot be postponed.
A well-maintained wooden window lasts 50–60 years. A neglected one lasts 10–15 before requiring costly replacement. The difference comes down to one simple thing: regular maintenance.
Why Wood Needs More Attention Than PVC
PVC profiles do not respond to moisture. Wood does. It absorbs moisture in summer and swells; it dries out in winter and shrinks. This natural movement causes two problems: the seal between sash and frame is cyclically compressed and stretched – wearing faster; and if the wood surface is not protected, water penetrates inside, causing rot.
A good window paint or stain is not just aesthetics – it is a protective barrier. Without it, wood ages far faster.
Maintenance Schedule for Wooden Windows
Annually in spring: wash with mild detergent, check paint condition (blisters, peeling, cracks), lubricate hardware (hinges, handle, bolts), inspect seals.
Every 3–5 years: repaint or restain. South-facing windows with high sun exposure may need this as often as every 3 years; north-facing protected windows can go up to 7.
How to repaint correctly: sand to bare wood (P80–P120), fill cracks with exterior wood filler, apply impregnating primer, then at least two coats of exterior window paint – not ordinary emulsion, which will not withstand the movement of wood.
Impregnation – What It Is and Why It Matters
Impregnation means saturating the wood with a fungicide and hydrophobic agent before painting. Without it, paint covers the problem without protecting the wood from within. Grey discolouration or dark patches on unpainted wood mean fungal growth – painting over them will not stop the decay. Apply impregnant with a cloth or brush, allow at least 24 hours to absorb, then paint.
Summer Swelling – Window Stiff to Close
A classic wooden window problem. In humid summer conditions, the sash swells and catches when closing. Do not use force – forced closing of a swollen sash causes wood cracks and damages the multipoint lock. A professional can adjust hardware to summer mode (more tolerance) and, if needed, plane the sash at the point of friction.
When to Call a Professional
You can handle: washing, lubricating, touch-up painting, seal replacement if you know the size. Call a professional when: the sash droops despite adjustment; wood in a corner is soft or crumbles (rot, not dust); misting between panes (glass unit replacement needed); the sash is distorted or travels in an arc.
