Every window should open smoothly with a single wrist movement. If instead you have to yank it, use your full arm, or it catches at a specific point – something has gone wrong with the mechanism. The key insight: ignoring a stiff window almost always leads to a larger failure. A window opening under force is one working against its own components, accelerating wear on hinges, hardware and profiles.
4 Causes of a Hard-to-Open Window
1. Dirty or dry perimeter hardware
Hardware builds up dust, construction grit and dried-out grease over years of use. Contaminated hardware resists movement throughout the full opening cycle. Symptom: uniform resistance without a specific catch point, getting worse gradually over months. Fix: clean hardware and apply PTFE spray – a 20-minute task. Service cost from 50 PLN. 2. Compression too high – hardware adjustment needed
Eccentric hardware cams regulate how firmly the sash presses against the frame. Set too high (winter mode), the window requires significant force to break the sash away from the frame. This is especially pronounced in summer when the PCV profile expands slightly with heat. Symptom: strong resistance at the initial pull-open moment, equal across the whole perimeter, worse in warm weather. Fix: switch eccentric cams to lower compression with a flat screwdriver – each cam has 3 positions. Can be done by the homeowner. Service from 50 PLN if unsure.
3. Swollen timber profile – seasonal problem
Timber windows absorb moisture and swell – most noticeably in spring and after prolonged rain. A swollen sash becomes physically too large for its frame and catches or grinds on the reveal edge. Symptom: problem worsens in spring and damp weather, improves in hot dry summer. Visible rubbing marks on sash or frame edges. Timber windows only. 4. Worn scissor hinges – sash dropping
PVC scissor hinges typically last 10–15 years under regular use. As the metal wears, the sash drops a few millimetres – enough for the sash edge to rub against the frame or sill during opening. Symptom: window catches at a specific point (usually the corner opposite the hinges or the bottom edge); noticeable play when pushing the sash up and down; metallic grinding sound. Seasonality – When Windows Are Harder and Why
Summer/heat: PCV profiles expand thermally – dark windows in full sun can become noticeably stiffer at high compression settings. Spring/after rain: timber windows swell. Winter/frost: hardware grease thickens, metal contracts, old seals harden – first opening of a cold day may be stiff. Year-round with no seasonal pattern: mechanical fault (worn hinge, damaged hardware) – requires technical repair regardless of season.
3 Quick Diagnostic Tests
Listen: Open slowly – metallic grinding at a specific point = hardware/hinge fault. Uniform resistance throughout without metallic sound = excessive compression or dirty hardware. Check hinge play: With window closed, grip sash with both hands and try to move it up and down. More than 1–2 mm play = hinge adjustment or replacement needed. Seasonality: Did the problem appear suddenly (mechanical fault) or gradually (natural wear)? Does it worsen in summer (compression/PVC expansion) or spring after rain (timber)?

You can do yourself: switch eccentric cam compression; apply PTFE spray to hardware and hinges; clean hardware grooves.
