Draught from Window

If you can clearly feel air entering around a closed window, the first step is to identify the leakage path. Air can pass between the sash and frame, but it can also leak around the joint between the window frame and the wall opening. These situations require different diagnosis and do not necessarily call for the same service.

The symptom “draught from the window” therefore does not by itself mean that the gaskets need replacing or the hardware needs adjustment.

Where can a draught come from when the window is closed?

One possible leakage path is the interface between the movable sash and the frame. Gasket condition, sash position and correct engagement of the hardware and locking points can all be relevant.

Another group of leaks occurs around the frame at the window-to-wall joint. In that case, sash adjustment or gasket replacement alone will not remove the source of the airflow.

Are the gaskets causing the draught?

A worn, damaged, deformed or displaced gasket can reduce airtightness between the sash and frame. It should not, however, be assumed that every gasket needs replacement after a fixed number of years.

Does the window need adjustment?

Incorrect sash position or gasket compression can affect airtightness, but adjustment is appropriate only when diagnosis confirms a problem with sash alignment or hardware operation. Increasing compression “just in case” is not a universal fix for a draught.

What if the air is leaking around the frame?

Airflow can occur through the gap between the window frame and the wall opening. This should not be confused with leakage at the sash-to-frame interface.

How do we diagnose a window draught?

We identify where the airflow occurs and then assess the components relevant to that location: sash, frame, gaskets, hardware operation or the window-to-wall joint. Only after locating the source can we determine whether adjustment, gasket replacement, joint sealing or another repair is appropriate.

Not every surface that feels cold is leaking air. Glass and frame surfaces can be colder than the indoor air even without direct airflow, so a sensation of cold alone is not enough to identify a leak.

What can you check without dismantling the window?

• Locate the area – check whether air movement is noticeable along the sash edge or closer to the frame-to-wall or sill joint.
• Look at the gasket – visible cracking, tearing or displacement from its groove is useful diagnostic information.
• Notice how the sash operates – rubbing, difficult closing or visibly uneven positioning may indicate an additional issue that needs assessment.
• Inspect visible joints around the frame – cracks or gaps are worth documenting, but appearance alone does not establish the full repair required.

Do not adjust hardware compression yourself simply to squeeze the gasket harder. Settings depend on the hardware system and the condition of the sash as a whole.

Does a draught mean the whole window needs replacing?

No. Many air leaks can be addressed without replacing the whole window when its construction and condition allow repair. At the same time, a specific solution cannot be promised from the symptom alone: the airflow path and its cause need to be identified first.
