Window Lets Cold In

Feeling cold around a closed window does not automatically mean the gasket is worn or that the sash needs more compression. The discomfort may come from air leakage, the joint between the window and the wall, or simply a low surface temperature on the glass or frame.

We therefore identify where the problem actually comes from before recommending adjustment, sealing, gasket replacement or another repair.

Where can cold around a window come from?

• The sash-to-frame seal – a worn or damaged gasket can reduce airtightness. Incorrect sash or hardware alignment can also reduce airtightness.
• The frame-to-wall joint – air leakage at the installation joint can cause draughts and heat loss even when the sash itself is properly closed.
• Hardware or sash alignment – if the sash is not correctly aligned with the frame and locking points, adjustment may be required. This does not automatically mean the window needs a seasonal compression change.
• Glass, spacer or frame profile – a cold surface does not always mean cold air is entering. The thermal properties of the glazing unit, spacer and frame affect surface temperature and overall insulation.
• A thermal bridge or installation-zone issue – locally low surface temperatures can contribute to condensation and a feeling of cold even without an obvious draught.

Is it a draught or simply a cold surface?

This distinction matters. If you can clearly feel air movement, we look for an air-leakage path. If there is no noticeable airflow but the glass, frame or reveal feels very cold, the issue may relate to the thermal performance of the window or its connection to the building.

Condensation does not identify one specific fault either. It depends on factors including surface temperature and indoor humidity, so we assess it together with the other symptoms.

Simply increasing sash compression for the season is not a universal solution. Some hardware systems allow compression adjustment, but the correct setting depends on the design and condition of the window. If diagnostics show an alignment or hardware issue, the appropriate solution is professional window adjustment.

How do we diagnose the problem?

We check where the cold or air movement is noticeable, the condition of the gaskets, sash closing and the operation of the locking components. We also inspect the frame-to-wall area and visible signs of problems around the glazing and frame.

This helps distinguish an airtightness problem from a thermal-performance issue and determine the appropriate work. Before paid repair work begins, we provide a quote.

What can you safely check yourself?

You can note whether the cold is concentrated in one place or felt along a larger part of the window, and whether you can actually feel air movement. You can also visually inspect the gaskets and the frame-to-wall area for obvious damage.

Do not change hardware settings at random or increase sash compression simply because it is winter. If adjustment is needed, it should match the specific hardware system and the condition of the window.

What solution may be required?

Depending on the diagnosis, adjustment, maintenance or gasket replacement may be enough. Air leakage at the frame-to-wall joint may require work on the installation seal. If the issue comes from the thermal properties of the glazing, frame or another component, we determine the appropriate solution after assessing the actual window.
