Window Trickle Vents

Has an existing window trickle vent stopped behaving as before, become damaged, or are you considering a first installation? The first question is what role the device should play in the room. Window trickle vents provide a designed path for outdoor air and should work with the building's ventilation system. We do not assume that every humidity problem means a faulty vent or that every airtight window should be routed for one.

What does a window trickle vent do?

A trickle vent creates a controlled path for outdoor air to enter a room. This is particularly relevant where air is extracted and replacement air must enter through appropriately designed air inlets. The vent itself is not a complete ventilation system and cannot replace effective extract ventilation.

High humidity, condensation, mould or stuffiness should therefore not automatically be attributed to one device. Vent servicing answers a narrower question: is the device clear, complete, operating as intended and suitable for the application?

Do Polish Technical Conditions require window trickle vents?

The requirement is not simply “a vent in every window”. Where a room uses ventilation other than mechanical supply or balanced mechanical supply-and-extract, the required outdoor-air supply must be provided through air-supply devices located in windows, balcony doors or other parts of the external envelope. The specific solution should suit the building's ventilation design.

This matters when older windows are replaced with tighter ones. Rather than assuming a fixed number or type of trickle vent, the route for both incoming and extracted air should be understood for the particular building.

Pressure-controlled, humidity-controlled or manually controlled?

Different devices regulate airflow differently. Humidity-controlled vents use an element that responds to indoor relative humidity and changes opening within the range designed into the product. Pressure-controlled vents limit the effect of increasing pressure difference on airflow, while manually controlled products let the user select settings provided by the manufacturer.

Vent type should not be selected only from whether the frame is PVC, timber or aluminium. The ventilation system, required airflow, window construction, installation position and product parameters all matter.

How can you recognise a problem with an existing vent?

Reasons for inspection include visible damage to the housing or control element, difficulty moving a user-operated part, contamination of airflow openings, or a clear change in behaviour. Unusual noise is worth investigating, but whistling alone does not prove a fault because sound can depend on airflow and pressure difference.

We do not treat a “hand test” as conclusive diagnostics. Airflow depends on current conditions and some vents change their opening automatically. Failing to feel obvious air movement is not, by itself, proof that the device is blocked.

Condensation and mould – why a vent is not a guaranteed cure

Ventilation affects indoor humidity, so inadequate air exchange can contribute to moisture problems. Condensation on glazing also depends on surface temperature, indoor humidity and outdoor conditions. Mould can additionally be associated with local thermal bridges, moisture in the building fabric or other building issues.

We therefore do not promise that fitting a trickle vent will “remove mould” or “eliminate condensation”. The device needs to be considered as one part of a larger system rather than a stand-alone cure for every symptom.

Service, cleaning or replacement?

The correct scope depends on the particular product. Some devices can be cleaned as described by their manufacturer without interfering with the control element; others contain components that should not be soaked, dismantled, lubricated or adjusted by the user. We do not apply one universal “full dismantling and membrane maintenance” procedure.

If the device is dirty but complete and functional, appropriate cleaning may be enough. If a component is damaged or the device does not operate as intended, we assess repair or replacement. We do not assume that every membrane, flap or slider is available as a separately replaceable part.

First-time installation in an existing window

Installation should not begin with routing the profile. The window construction, intended device position and opening method must first be assessed against the requirements of the selected solution. PVC, timber and aluminium profiles differ internally, and modification in the wrong location can damage the construction or compromise its performance.

We confirm installation feasibility for the individual window. Where appropriate, the opening and device are installed in accordance with the selected system requirements. We do not promise that every vent can safely be installed in every existing profile.

Trickle vents and window airtightness – not a contradiction

Airtight window joints and controlled air supply address different issues. Leakage is an uncontrolled airflow path; a correctly selected trickle vent creates a path intentionally designed for air supply. Random leakage should not be left in place as a substitute for ventilation.

If air enters where it should not, window sealing diagnostics may be appropriate. If the sash gasket is the problem, gasket replacement is a separate scope. The trickle vent should remain the deliberate air-supply route.

Do trickle vents need periodic cleaning?

Yes. Trickle vents can collect dust and other contamination, so they should be cleaned in accordance with the instructions for the specific model. For example, Aereco recommends annual cleaning of its vents and explicitly warns against rinsing humidity-controlled vents with water. This does not create a universal dismantling procedure for every product or a single service life for humidity-sensitive elements.

A safe user principle is not to obstruct airflow openings and not to interfere with automatic elements using methods not specified by the manufacturer. If the unit is heavily contaminated, damaged or behaving unusually, identifying the model is the right starting point.

How much does a window trickle vent and installation cost?

In our current offer, the Airbox ventilation system with mechanical adjustment starts from PLN 130. This is the starting price for that solution, not a universal price for every repair, replacement or installation of any trickle vent. Final cost depends on the selected device, window construction and scope of work.
