Winkhaus Hardware Repair

Winkhaus is a German manufacturer of window hardware and door locking systems. In Tilt&Turn windows, two important names are activPilot and the older autoPilot. Winkhaus introduced autoPilot in 1996 and activPilot in 2006.

We service standard Winkhaus window hardware as part of our broader window-mechanism service. The manufacturer name or an activPilot marking is not a complete part number. Before adjustment or repair, we identify the system variant, window construction, markings, dimensions and function of the relevant component.

What is the difference between activPilot and autoPilot?

• activPilot is a broad Winkhaus hardware family, with solutions including activPilot Concept and activPilot Select as well as other application-specific variants.
• activPilot Concept is a modular Tilt&Turn system with a visible hinge side. Winkhaus documentation provides adjustment of height, lateral position and contact pressure on specified components.
• activPilot Select uses a concealed hinge side and has its own components and adjustment ranges, so instructions for one activPilot variant should not automatically be applied to another.
• autoPilot is the older family introduced in 1996. Servicing it requires identification of the exact component and the available repair solution.

A Winkhaus or activPilot marking therefore narrows the identification but is not sufficient on its own for safe parts selection.

Are autoPilot and activPilot parts interchangeable?

We do not assume universal interchangeability between complete families. With older autoPilot hardware, we check the marking, dimensions, component function and its interface with the remaining mechanism. A compatible service part or justified modernisation is selected only after that identification.

The same caution applies within activPilot: Concept, Select and other variants do not represent one identical set of hinges, corner drives or adjustment points.

How can you help identify Winkhaus hardware before the visit?

• Photograph the complete sash so the window type and hinge side are visible.
• Look for markings on the faceplate, corner drive, stay, hinge or other visible components.
• Take a close-up of the faulty area and readable photographs of numbers or symbols.
• Do not dismantle the mechanism simply to find a marking. If a number cannot be read safely, we can identify the system during diagnostics.

Common symptoms of Winkhaus hardware problems

• the sash drops or rubs against the frame;
• the handle becomes noticeably stiff;
• the window no longer moves correctly between the functions provided by its construction;
• locking requires excessive force or works unevenly;
• the closed sash no longer contacts the frame evenly;
• a visible component has play, cracking, deformation or unusual wear.

None of these symptoms automatically identifies a part for replacement. Similar behaviour can result from sash geometry, hardware adjustment, component wear, fastening, a gasket or several causes at once.

How do we service Winkhaus window hardware?

1. Identify the system

We check markings, mechanism layout, hinge-side design, window construction and the functions present in the installed variant.

2. Assess geometry and hardware operation

We inspect sash movement, hinges, perimeter hardware, corner drives, locking components, the handle drive and corresponding keeps where present.

3. Adjust where appropriate

If component condition permits, we correct sash position and cooperating hardware according to the installed variant. Official activPilot documentation shows different adjustment options and tools for different components, so we do not apply one universal procedure to all Winkhaus hardware.

4. Repair or replace the failed component

Replacement selection follows identification of the system, dimensions and function. Complete mechanism replacement is considered only when component-level repair is not technically justified.

5. Verify operation after service

We test the functions provided by the specific window, including opening, tilting, closing, handle operation and locking. Independent geometry or gasket problems are explained separately.

What can you check safely yourself?

Record visible markings, note when resistance occurs and where the sash rubs. Do not force a stiff handle or turn unidentified adjustment screws at random. A draught, visible gap or paper test cannot by itself establish whether the correct remedy is hardware adjustment, geometry correction, component repair or gasket work.

How much does Winkhaus hardware service cost?

Our current price list shows window adjustment from 50 PLN and mechanism replacement from 50 PLN. These are service starting prices, not a guaranteed price for every Winkhaus repair. The final cost depends on the fault, system, required parts and actual scope of work. On-site diagnostics and technician call-out are free, and we provide the exact quote before paid work begins.

An indicative service price list is available separately. After registration, we contact you within about 15 minutes. Completed work carries a written guarantee of up to five years; its scope and duration depend on the service performed.
