The first sign of a problem does not have to be a completely jammed window. The sash may begin to rub, the handle may operate differently, and a closed window may develop a draught, noticeable cold or moisture in an unusual place.
Each of these changes is a clue, but none of them alone shows which component needs adjustment or repair. The same symptom can have several causes, while several symptoms can result from one problem. Window diagnostics therefore start with a precise observation of what has changed.
Below are seven signs that can be noticed without dismantling or adjusting the window.
7 signs worth paying attention to
1. A draught or cold around a closed window
Noticeable air movement and a feeling of cold are worth distinguishing. A draught suggests airflow, while cold near the glass or frame alone does not necessarily indicate an air leak.
If air movement is genuinely felt, diagnostics should establish where it occurs. Sash-to-frame contact, seal condition or another area of the construction may need checking. It should not be assumed in advance that adjustment or seal replacement alone will solve the issue.
2. Mist or droplets between the panes
First establish whether the moisture is genuinely between the panes rather than on the room-side or exterior glass surface. If the mark cannot be wiped from any accessible side, an issue inside the sealed glass unit can be suspected.
This is different from ordinary surface condensation. The appearance of the mist alone cannot show where the glass unit lost its seal. We cover the subject in more detail in our guide to condensation between window panes.
3. The handle has started to operate differently
A sign can be not only greater resistance but any clear change in handle operation — for example resistance that appears only during a certain sash movement or at a particular handle position.
This is still not enough to establish whether the cause is the mechanism itself, sash setting or the interaction of several components. What is more useful is knowing at which point the resistance appears. Do not apply extra force in an attempt to push through a sticking mechanism.
4. The seal is cracked, deformed or damaged
Cracks, local damage or clear deformation of the seal can be noticed without removing it. Its appearance is only one part of assessing the airtightness of the window.
Seal condition should be considered together with how the sash closes and contacts the frame. This prevents the entire problem from being assigned to the seal simply because it is the first visible component.
5. Damp or mould appears around the reveal
With this symptom, location matters: whether the moisture appears on the glass, at the junction between frame and reveal, or on the reveal surface itself. These areas should not be treated as the same problem.
It also matters whether the moisture is constant or appears only under certain conditions. Location alone is not enough to identify a component that needs repair.
6. Noise reduction has changed
The most useful comparison is with the same window over time. If outside sounds become noticeably more audible under similar external conditions, it is worth checking whether a draught has also appeared, sash operation has changed, or a visible seal problem is present.
Greater noise does not identify a specific fault, but together with other changes it can help narrow the inspection scope.
7. The sash rubs or has changed position
Rubbing against the frame, threshold or another part means sash operation has changed. Useful details include whether the sash rubs at the same point every time and whether it happens while opening, closing or only when the sash is pressed into the frame.
This does not automatically point to one specific component. If handle operation has also changed or closing requires more force, those details should be assessed together.
Why one symptom is not always enough for a diagnosis
A stiffer handle can appear together with sash rubbing, while a draught can appear together with a change in closing behaviour. Symptoms are therefore not assessed in isolation during diagnostics.
A window consists of several interacting parts: sash, frame, hardware, seals and glazing. One irregularity can affect several symptoms, while a similar symptom can come from different sources.
The purpose of diagnostics is not to assign a separate replacement part to every symptom, but to establish which symptoms may share one cause and which concern independent components.
What to check and note before a technician visits
No tools or dismantling are needed for an initial observation. Inspect the window in good light, then open and close it normally. Note visible damage, moisture marks, where the sash rubs, and the point at which handle operation changes.
It is useful to record exactly where the symptom appears, whether it is constant or intermittent, and when it was first noticed. For moisture, mist or another mark visible only occasionally, a photo can help.
The aim is not to diagnose the cause yourself. “The handle is stiff” is less useful than “the resistance appears only during the final turn of the handle when the sash is closed”. Likewise, “the window rubs” is less useful than knowing where the contact occurs and during which movement.
At this stage there is no need to adjust hardware, remove seals or dismantle other components. The purpose is to collect information that helps reproduce the problem more accurately during the visit.
What a technician checks during diagnostics
The inspection scope is matched to the symptom — not every window requires every component to be checked in the same way.
For opening problems, the technician checks where sash movement changes or rubbing starts and when handle resistance increases. For suspected air leakage, sash-to-frame contact and seal condition are assessed. With moisture, the first step is to establish where it is forming; with mist in the glazing, whether it is genuinely inside the sealed glass unit.
Only after these checks can it be determined whether adjustment, repair, replacement of a specific component or a broader assessment of the construction is needed.
When it is worth planning diagnostics
Diagnostics are worth planning when a new or repeatable change appears in window operation. There is no need to wait until the sash stops opening or the handle becomes completely blocked.
An early check does not guarantee a small repair. It does help avoid adjusting or replacing parts purely on an assumption and continuing to use a mechanism despite clear resistance.
The inspection can be combined with seasonal window service before winter, but there is no need to wait until autumn if the problem appears earlier.

The more precisely it is known where and when the problem appears, the easier it is to assess related components and match the work scope to the actual condition of the window.
When observation is not enough to identify the cause
If a symptom is repeatable but safe observation still does not show which component is causing it, the next step may be window and door diagnostics. The purpose is not to “find something to adjust”, but to identify the source of the problem and only then choose the appropriate work scope.
