Spring Window Service Checklist – 10 Points to Check After Winter
The heating season is ending – but your windows may be in worse shape than you think. Four months of frost, freeze-thaw cycles and dry radiator air leave their mark on seals, hardware and PVC profiles. This checklist walks you through 10 inspection points – no tools needed.
Spring is the best time for a window inspection. Temperatures stabilise above 10°C – EPDM seals are elastic and can be properly assessed. Hardware can be adjusted without risk of seizing in frost. And you have all summer and autumn before the next winter arrives.
Point 1: Perimeter Seals
Press your finger along the seal around the sash. A healthy EPDM seal feels soft and springy. If it is hard, crumbles or shows visible gaps – it has reached the end of its life. A failed seal lets through heat, noise and dust.
Point 2: Closing Action and Sash Play
Close the window and try to push the sash gently in both directions. A correctly adjusted window has zero play. Any movement means the hardware needs adjusting. Point 3: Glass Unit Condition
Look at the glass at an angle, especially on a cool morning. Milky haze, condensation or droplets between panes mean the glass unit seal has failed. Moisture has entered the insulating chamber – thermal performance drops by up to 80%. This cannot be repaired – the glass unit must be replaced. Learn what replacement costs.
Point 4: Hinges and Sash Geometry
Open the window fully and release the sash. Watch for 10 seconds – does it stay put or slowly droop? A drooping sash means worn or poorly adjusted scissor hinges. Also: when closed, the gap between sash and frame should be even all around. Larger at the bottom than the top – classic drooping hinge symptom.
Points 5–9: Hardware, Handle, Profile, Sealing, Tilt
Lubricate all moving points annually – even when everything looks fine. Test the handle for smooth travel and return to horizontal. Inspect profile corners for cracks at weld joints. Check external silicone at the sill for gaps. Verify the tilt position works evenly without creaking.
Point 10: Count and Decide
- 1–2 minor issues – hardware adjustment visit
- 3–5 issues – full spring service: seals, hardware, handle
- Misting between panes – glass unit replacement, regardless of other faults
